Algae and weed residue

A shallow lake leaves a different mark

Beaver Dam Lake is one of the larger lakes in the region and one of the shallowest, and shallow warm water in a farm-country watershed means heavy algae and weed growth through summer.

That produces a residue on anything that goes in and out of the water that deeper, clearer lakes do not. Boat trailers come out coated in green film and weed fragments. Tow vehicles get it thrown up from the trailer and tracked in on the ramp. It dries fast on hot paint and trailers, it stains light surfaces, and it smells as it breaks down — which on a trailer parked in a driveway all week is noticeable.

Algae film on paint is organic and it bonds as it dries. It needs to be softened and removed as part of decontamination; washing dried algae film moves some of it and leaves the stain.

Dodge County farm roads

Outside the city it is working farmland on county roads, with the tractor traffic, field-access mud and seasonal spreading that comes with it. Organic road material on lower panels and in arches is alkaline and corrosive over time and does not rinse once dry.

In spring and autumn that is at its heaviest, and those are the months to plan exterior work around.

The county seat

Beaver Dam is the Dodge County seat and its employment centre, so it also sends the county-seat commuter profile: real daily mileage on Highway 151, concentrated driver's-side interior wear, and paint that has accumulated years of bonded contamination without ever being decontaminated.

It is about thirty-five minutes to Hartford. For a boat-towing vehicle at the end of the season or a commuter that has never had a proper reset, that is a reasonable drive.
