Quarry dust

Lannon stone is in the air

The village gave its name to Lannon stone, the pale dolomitic limestone quarried there for well over a century and used across the Midwest. The quarries are still active, and a working quarry produces a continuous fine mineral dust that settles across the village and the roads around it.

Limestone dust behaves differently from ordinary road grime. It is alkaline, it is extremely fine, and when it lands on damp paint and dries it leaves a chalky film that bonds rather than rinsing. Left through a summer of dew cycles it contributes to water-spot-style etching on horizontal panels, and it is a large part of why Lannon vehicles so often have a dull cast on the bonnet and roof that washing does not shift.

It is a decontamination problem rather than a wash problem, and the clay stage in particular pulls a startling amount of it off a vehicle that has never had it done.

Stone-haul traffic on the village roads

Quarry operations mean heavy truck traffic on the roads through and around Lannon, and haul trucks drop material.

The practical result is more loose stone on the road surface than the village size would suggest, and more chipping on leading edges — bonnet, mirrors, windscreen surround — on vehicles that share those roads daily. It also means more dust thrown up in dry weather and more slush thrown in wet.

Neither is dramatic on any single day. Over a year of it, Lannon vehicles carry a distinctive combination of mineral film and front-end chipping that we do not see together anywhere else.

Inside the cabin

The same fine dust that lands on paint gets into cabins on shoes and through vents, and because it is pale it shows immediately on dark interiors.

It settles into seat stitching, vent louvres and the felt of door pockets, where a vacuum does not lift it. Compressed air first, then vacuum, is the sequence that actually removes it — and on a Lannon vehicle that step matters more than almost anywhere.
