The Fox River and the low ground

The Fox River runs through downtown Waukesha and the low-lying areas along it hold humidity into the mornings the way river corridors do everywhere. Vehicles parked near the river spend more time wet than vehicles on the higher ground, which extends dew time on paint and keeps cabins damp longer in winter.

The river also floods. Not often, but enough that some of the lots and streets along it have been under water more than once, and a vehicle that was parked in one of those spots at the wrong time is a different job entirely. Water ingress into a cabin — even a few inches, even briefly — puts moisture into the carpet padding and under the seats where it does not dry on its own, and the musty smell that follows a few weeks later is the padding, not the carpet.

A large downtown and a university

Downtown Waukesha is one of the larger and busier historic downtowns in the area, with a university, a full event calendar, and a lot of street and structure parking. That gives Waukesha vehicles the city profile — street-parked, never garaged, structure runoff spotting on roofs — more than any of the smaller towns around us.

Student vehicles are their own category: driven hard, cleaned rarely, and frequently sold or handed on at the end of a degree. A full reset before that handover is the cheapest thing that can be done to the resale number.

Commuting on two corridors

I-94 to the north and Highway 18 through the city carry most of Waukesha's commuting, and both are heavily treated in winter. Combined with the river-corridor damp, that gives a Waukesha vehicle a wet-outside, wet-inside winter that is worth a proper reset in April.
