What mobile does well

Convenience, obviously. The car is detailed in your driveway or your office lot while you do something else, and for a maintenance wash or a straightforward interior clean that is a real advantage.

Maintenance washing is where mobile shines. A regular, competent hand wash at your home is better for the paint than any automatic wash, and mobile makes that practical for people who would not otherwise do it.

And light interior work — a vacuum, surface cleaning, a tidy-up between proper details — is well within what a good mobile operator does from a van.

What mobile cannot do

Extraction, properly. Hot water extraction needs a heated extractor, a water supply, somewhere for the waste water to go, and time for the carpet to release between passes. Some vans carry a small extractor; none carry what a bay has, and a driveway in January is not a place carpet dries.

Paint correction, properly. Correction is done under controlled inspection lighting, on a dry panel, at a stable temperature, over hours. A driveway has none of those. Correction attempted outdoors is correction done blind, and the polisher is removing clear coat whether or not the operator can see the result.

Ceramic coating, properly. A coating needs a decontaminated, corrected panel and specific cure conditions — temperature, humidity, no dust, no dew — for hours after application. Applied outdoors it is applied into the weather, and the durability claims on the bottle assume it was not.

Winter, at all. Below freezing, water on a driveway is ice and product will not work. Mobile detailing in Wisconsin is a seasonal business, and the season it cannot operate in is the one when cars need it most.

Which jobs need a bay

Anything with extraction: odor removal, interior details with salt in the padding, water damage. Anything with correction or coating. Anything that takes a full day, because a full day outdoors in Wisconsin is a full day of weather.

Anything where you want the paint assessed under proper light before deciding what to do. That assessment is where the honest recommendation comes from, and it cannot be done in sun or shade.

How to think about it

Use mobile for what it is good at: regular maintenance washing and light interior upkeep between proper visits. Use a shop for the reset — the once-or-twice-a-year full detail, the odor job, the correction and coating.

The two are not really competitors. A car that gets mobile maintenance washes and an annual shop reset is a car that is being looked after properly. A car that only ever gets one or the other is missing half.
