The summer car and the daily

A Chenequa garage usually holds a daily driver, something for winter, and at least one vehicle that only comes out in good weather. Those three need three different approaches, and treating them the same is how the good-weather car ends up in worse condition than the daily.

The daily takes the corridor commute and needs decontamination and protection on a normal cycle. The winter vehicle takes the brine and needs the underside and the cabin reset in April. The summer car takes almost no road exposure and, paradoxically, almost all of the paint damage — because it gets washed by whoever is available, dried with whatever is to hand, and dusted between drives, and every one of those adds marring to paint that never had any. The car that is driven least is the one most likely to need correction.

Long wooded drives

Chenequa lots are large and the drives are long, private and under mature canopy. A vehicle that starts and ends every trip on a quarter-mile of tree-covered drive takes the full oak-and-pine profile — sap, frass in early summer, honeydew, tannin in autumn — and it takes it in shade, where paint stays damp and all of that bonds.

Crushed-stone and gravel drives add fine pale dust to lower panels and arches, and asphalt drives that are sealed regularly transfer sealant onto tyres and rockers. It is the same list as a suburban car under trees, at larger scale and with more of it.

Lake-estate roads

The roads around Pine Lake and Beaver Lake are narrow, winding and lightly treated in winter compared with the highways, which means more time on partially cleared surfaces and more slush thrown into arches. In summer they carry boat and trailer traffic to the private ramps, with the ramp-water spotting and trailer grit that follows.

We take Chenequa vehicles one at a time, which for a multi-car household usually means a sequence: the summer car for correction and coating in spring, the daily for a reset, the winter vehicle in April. We will lay out an order that makes sense rather than assuming they all need the same thing on the same day.
