The car that lives on the street

The single biggest difference between a city vehicle and a suburban one is that the city vehicle is never garaged. It lives on a street or in a structure, and it takes every dew cycle, every storm, every plough pass and every night of freeze-thaw, all year, with nothing between it and the weather.

That produces paint with more bonded contamination than its age suggests, and it produces a cabin that never fully dries in winter because the car never sits anywhere warm. It also produces the small-damage accumulation that comes with tight street parking — mirror scuffs, bumper contact, door edges — which is not detailing but affects how the car reads.

For that vehicle, a proper annual reset makes a visible difference, and it is the Milwaukee vehicle most worth the drive.

Parking structures

A lot of Milwaukee vehicles spend their working day in a structure, and structures drip. Concrete deck runoff — water carrying salt, oil and calcium leachate from the concrete — lands on the roof and bonnet of whatever is parked below the joints, and when it dries it leaves mineral spotting that does not wash off.

It is the same mechanism as hard-water spotting and it needs the same fix: decontamination rather than washing. It is also one of the most common things Milwaukee owners have never had explained to them, because it looks like the paint failing and it is not.

Urban salt is heavier salt

City streets are treated more intensively than county roads — more passes, more material, more often — and arterials like Capitol Drive, Fond du Lac Avenue and the freeways carry the most.
