Harbour and charters

A charter port

Port Washington is one of Wisconsin's major Lake Michigan charter fishing ports, and through the season a substantial number of local vehicles are running to and from the marina with gear, coolers and catch.

Fish is the signature. It gets into truck beds, boot carpets and cabins on gear and clothing, and fish protein is among the most persistent organic odors there is, because it soaks into porous material and the breakdown is slow and continuous. A cooler that leaked into a boot carpet in July is still a problem in October.

Marina vehicles also carry harbour grit, wet-rope residue, and a fine coating of the algae-and-diesel film that sits on everything near a working harbour.

Direct lake exposure

The city sits directly on Lake Michigan, and lakefront vehicles take an exposure that Mequon and Cedarburg, a few miles inland, do not.

Lake wind carries spray and fine moisture well up into the town, and vehicles parked near the water are wet far more of the time than inland vehicles. That dwell time is what turns whatever lands on paint into bonded contamination, and it is why lakefront paint dulls faster than its age suggests. Lake-effect weather adds fog and drizzle days that inland towns do not get.

In winter the same geography produces lake-effect snow, which means more plough runs, more salt, and more of it on the roads around the harbour than the county average.

Port Washington is at the edge of our area and we would rather be honest about that. For a wash and a vacuum, it is not worth the drive.
