What happens at the ramp

Backing a trailer into the lake throws water up the rear of the tow vehicle — tailgate, rear glass, rear quarters, bumper — and on a hot day that water is landing on panels that have been in the sun for hours. It flashes off almost immediately, and what it leaves behind is everything the lake water carried: dissolved minerals, algae, fine silt.

Lake water in a limestone watershed is hard, and the mineral rings it leaves as it flashes are the same mechanism as hard-water spotting from a hose, at higher temperature and with organic material mixed in. On bare clear coat those rings bond on contact with the hot panel, and a summer of ramp visits builds a mottled, dull rear end that washing does not clear.

What a coating does at the ramp

A coated surface changes how water sits on it. Instead of spreading and flashing as a film, it beads and sheets, so most of the ramp water runs off before it can dry. What does dry leaves its minerals on the coating rather than on the clear coat, and the next rinse takes them away.

That is the whole difference: the same ramp, the same hot panels, the same hard water, and the tailgate stays clear instead of spotting. It also handles the algae and silt the same way — they sit on the coating and rinse, rather than bonding to bare paint as they dry.

Prep, and the end-of-season timing

A tow vehicle that has done a few summers at the ramp usually arrives with bonded mineral spotting and some etching on the rear panels, and a coating seals in whatever is underneath it. So the rear of the vehicle in particular gets decontaminated and, where the spotting has etched, corrected before anything goes on. That prep is what moves the price from the quoted figure.

September is the window: the summer's ramp damage can be addressed first, cure conditions are good, and the coating goes on with a winter of towing-free brine ahead of it and next summer's ramp season after that. The full detail handles the rest of the vehicle in the same visit.
