Coat the daily first

The instinct is to coat the car you care about most, which is the summer car. The car that benefits most is the one that takes the most exposure per year, which is the daily.

A daily on the corridor commute takes brine mist across the whole vehicle all winter, road film all year, and the canopy profile off the drive at both ends of every trip. A coating on that car changes every wash from a scrub into a rinse and stops five months of brine bonding to the clear coat. That is a large amount of prevented damage per dollar. The summer car takes almost none of that exposure; what it takes is hand-care marring, which a coating helps with but correction fixes.

The winter vehicle second

The truck or SUV that does the lake-estate roads in winter takes the heaviest underside and lower-panel contamination in the household — lightly treated roads mean slush packed into arches and rockers, and the corridor adds brine on top. Coating the lower half of that vehicle in particular is what makes the April reset a rinse rather than a decontamination.

It also usually needs the least prep. Winter vehicles tend to have the least hand-care marring because nobody dusts the truck.

The summer car last, and after correction

The summer car is coated last because it needs the most prep: hand-care marring has to be corrected first or the coating locks it in for years. Corrected in May and coated the same visit, it comes out of the garage on the first warm Saturday with paint that reflects the way it did at delivery, and the coating is what keeps the hand-care from putting the marring back.
