Care is where the marring comes from

A good-weather car does a few hundred miles a year. It is washed after every drive, often by hand, often by whoever is available. It is dried with a towel. It is dusted with a duster between drives because it sits under the garage lights and shows every speck.

Every one of those acts drags something across the paint. A wash mitt reloaded from one bucket. A drying towel that touched the door bottom. A duster that has picked up grit and is now grinding it in. None of it looks like damage on the day, and over a few seasons it adds up to a swirl pattern on paint that has never been near a brush wash — which is why the owner is surprised when it shows up under sun on the first drive of the year.

The daily driver, by contrast, gets touched far less per mile. It is washed less often relative to its use and dusted never. It frequently has better paint.

Correcting a low-mileage finish

The good news is that hand-care marring is shallow. It is the most correctable defect there is, and on a garage-kept car a single-stage correction typically recovers nearly all of the gloss.

The care needed is on the assessment. Low-mileage cars have often been corrected before — at the dealer, at delivery, at a previous shop — and each correction took clear coat that does not come back. We measure and inspect under focused light before deciding how aggressive it is safe to be, because a car that is going to be kept for decades cannot afford a correction that assumes there is more clear coat than there is.

Not doing it again

Correction removes the marring permanently. Continuing to hand-care the car the same way puts it back in two seasons. The fixes are simple and they are about method rather than effort: two buckets with grit guards, a plush drying towel used by blotting, and — the one that matters most — no dry dusting. A detailer with a quick-detail spray lifts dust; a dry duster grinds it.

A coating after correction makes all of that easier, because a coated surface releases dust and water with almost no contact. On a car that lives under garage lights and gets looked at, that is the combination that keeps it looking corrected. May is the month, before the first summer drive.
