Where loading damage lives
Most correction jobs are about swirls on bonnets and flanks, because that is where wash marring is. A vehicle that carries skis or a roof box all winter has a different pattern, and it is in different places.
The roof, along both rails, where ski edges and box latches contact the paint on every load. The rear pillars and the top of the tailgate or boot lid, where skis are leaned while the rack is opened. The roof edge above the doors, where a ski swung wide catches it. And the leading edge of the roof, where the rack feet sit and grit trapped under them grinds every time the car flexes.
It is directional — long, parallel scratches rather than a random swirl pattern — and it is concentrated on surfaces that a standard correction quotes as an afterthought. On a Delafield car after a season, the roof needs more time than the bonnet.
How deep, and what comes out
A steel ski edge dragged across clear coat under load can go deep. The fingernail test applies: a scratch that catches a nail is usually through the clear and will not fully level. Box-latch and rail-contact marks are shallower and correct well. Grit under rack feet leaves a haze that a single-stage pass clears.
We assess under inspection light, roof included, and we will tell you which marks are coming out and which are not before touching the paint. Clear coat on a roof is no thicker than anywhere else, and a roof takes the most UV, so we are conservative there.
Not doing it again
Correction removes the season's damage permanently. Loading the same way next winter puts it back. The practical fixes are cheap: a rack pad or a towel on the rear pillar while loading, ski bags rather than bare edges, and cleaning the rack feet and the roof under them before fitting in autumn so there is no grit to grind.
A coating on the roof and pillars does not stop a steel edge scratching, but it does make grit and light contact far less likely to mark. Corrected in late March after the trails close, coated before next season, and loaded with a little care, the roof stays corrected.
