Ski wax is not a cleaning problem

Lapham Peak's lit cross-country trails mean skis are in Delafield vehicles several times a week through winter, and skis carry wax. Glide wax transfers from the base onto whatever the skis lean against; kick wax transfers from the kick zone and from hands onto seats and door cards.

Wax is neither water-soluble nor detergent-soluble. Interior cleaners do not touch it. It leaves a faintly tacky patch on a rear seat or a boot carpet that holds dirt, and it is routinely missed because nothing in a standard clean is designed to remove it.

It needs a solvent approach, applied carefully to the affected area, and it is the single most common thing we find on a Delafield vehicle that the owner has already had cleaned elsewhere.

A cabin that never dries

The winter gear profile is wet boots, wet gloves, snow off skis and poles, and the slush that comes in on all of it. It lands in the rear footwells and the boot and it stays there, because the short trips through the historic downtown never warm the cabin enough to dry it out.

Add road salt from I-94 in the carpet backing, which holds moisture, and a Delafield cabin can stay damp from the first snow to the last. That is the musty-smell mechanism and it responds to extraction, which pulls the moisture and the salt out together.

Why late March

Detailing in January puts a fresh cabin back into two more months of ski season. Detailing in June means the winter damp has been sitting for three months and the lake season has started on top of it.

Late March is the window. The trails have closed, the salt is nearly done, and the cabin has been wet for as long as it is going to be. It is the visit that has the most to remove and lasts the longest.
