Gypsum is not like ordinary dust

Drywall dust is the one that catches people out. It is finer than road dust, it is pale enough to show on a dark interior within days, and it is slightly hygroscopic — it takes on moisture from the air and clumps rather than staying loose.

That clumping is why it resists a vacuum. Loose dust moves with airflow. Damp gypsum sits in the bottom of a seat seam or a vent louvre as a soft paste and stays there. It also leaves a faint white haze on dark plastics that people mistake for the material fading.

The sequence that removes it is dry first: compressed air to break it loose and lift it into the open cabin, then vacuum, then surface cleaning last. Wet-cleaning a gypsum-dusted dash first just spreads a thin plaster film across it.

The vents are the problem nobody sees

Construction dust gets into the HVAC system, because the cabin intake pulls it in every time the vehicle sits with the fan running near an active site.

The cabin air filter catches some. What gets past it coats the inside of the ducts and settles on the vent louvres, and every time the fan runs it pushes a small amount back into the cabin. This is why a Sussex vehicle can be cleaned thoroughly and have a fine white dust reappear on the dash within a week.

We clean the louvres and check the filter on every Sussex vehicle. If the filter is loaded, we will tell you — replacing it is the difference between the clean holding and the clean failing.

Footwells in the first year

New landscaping, bare soil, fresh mulch and unfinished drives mean that for roughly the first year in a new build, everything on the ground around the house ends up in the footwells.

It is coarse rather than fine, so it grinds. Carpet fibre under a driver's heel with grit in it wears through noticeably faster, and new-build footwells are frequently more worn at twelve months than a five-year-old car's. Getting it out is the only thing that slows that down.
