The car that is also a break room

On a twelve-hour shift the car is frequently the only private space its owner has. It is where breakfast happens on the way in, where the coffee lives, where dinner happens on the way home in the dark, and where the wrappers end up.

That produces a specific residue distribution. The console gaps and cupholders hold sticky drink residue that has been topped up for months. The driver's seat seams hold crumbs from meals eaten in it. The driver's door pocket is a small landfill. The passenger seat is where the bag goes and it carries whatever the bag brought out of the building.

None of it is dramatic on any given day. After a year of shifts it is the most food-contaminated interior we see outside of a family minivan, and it is concentrated almost entirely in the front half of the cabin.

Twelve hours parked, never dry

A car parked for twelve hours in a structure in February does not dry out. Slush that came in on shoes at six in the morning is still in the carpet at six at night, and the drive home is not long enough to change that. The next morning adds more.

By spring the front footwells of a shift vehicle have been wet for months, with road salt in the backing holding the moisture, and the smell is the result. It is not something the owner did. It is the schedule.

Extraction pulls the moisture and the salt out together, and on these vehicles the front footwells get a second pass as standard.

Scheduling around a rota

Shift workers are not free on a Tuesday afternoon, and we do not assume they are. Tell us what the rota looks like and we will find a rest day. Interior work is usually a same-day collection, so a drop-off in the morning of a day off and a pick-up that afternoon is the normal shape.

If the vehicle has been through a winter of structure parking and the paint has never been decontaminated, the full detail addresses both halves in one visit, which on a shift schedule is worth more than the price difference.
