Slow aging, not dirt

What happens to a cabin that is mostly parked

A car driven gently and garaged does not accumulate the grit, food and moisture of a commuter. What it accumulates is fine dust — the ambient dust of a garage, settling on every horizontal surface and into every seam over months — and time.

Time is the one that matters. Leather that is not conditioned dries from the topcoat outward, stiffens at the bolsters and along the seams, and eventually cracks there whether or not anyone ever sat on it. Dash plastics lose plasticiser to whatever light reaches them through a garage window. Rubber seals dry. None of that is dirt, and none of it is fixed by cleaning. It is fixed by feeding the surfaces before they fail.

The sun side

A car that sits in the same spot faces the same window, and one side of the cabin takes the light. On a garage-kept Mequon vehicle we routinely find a driver's-side dash and door top noticeably more faded than the passenger side, or the reverse, depending on the garage. The difference is invisible until the two are compared.

UV-blocking protectant on the exposed side, applied after a clean, is the fix, and it is cheap relative to a dash that has already chalked. The interior protection page covers what it does.

The gentle-use wear pattern

Even gentle use wears in one place: the driver's seat entry bolster, from getting in and out. On a low-mileage car it is often the only worn surface in the cabin, which makes it stand out more than it would on a car that is worn everywhere. It responds to cleaning and conditioning, and a leather coating on that bolster specifically takes the abrasion from then on.

The interior detail on a car like this is less about extraction and more about surface care — dust out of the seams with compressed air, every surface cleaned and then fed, glass done twice, and the sun side protected. It is a preservation visit, and once a year is usually right.
