Year one

What a year in a build does to paint

Twelve months of construction traffic on the surrounding streets puts a layered film onto paint: clay dust from site mud that dried on the road and got thrown up by every car, gypsum from drywall work, mortar and concrete dust, and the fresh-asphalt transfer from newly paved drives. All of it alkaline, all of it landing on paint that is damp with dew most mornings, all of it bonding when it dries.

By year one, the bonnet and roof of a Sussex car feel rough under a plastic bag and look flat in sun, and on a new car the owner has no idea why. The exterior half of a full detail is almost entirely decontamination on these — an alkaline-neutralising pre-wash, iron removal, clay — and then protection, because the build next door is not finished.

What a year in a build does to a cabin

Bare soil, fresh sod, mulch and unfinished drives mean everything on the ground around a new house ends up in the footwells for the first year, and it is coarse — it grinds. Construction dust rides in on shoes and through the cabin intake and settles into seams and vents.

The full detail handles the cabin the way a new-build cabin needs: compressed air through every gap first, because the dust is pale and clumps, then a full extraction of footwells that have had a year of yard ground into them, then the vents and a cabin filter check.

Then protect it, because year two is the same

A full reset at twelve months is worth doing once. It is not worth repeating every twelve months while the subdivision fills in. Protection is what changes that: a coated surface releases alkaline dust with a rinse, and fabric protection keeps year two's footwell grit from grinding in the way year one's did.
