Why not twice

The instinct is to reset after the lake season in September and again after the leaves in November. On a Hubertus vehicle that is two full-day visits six weeks apart, and the second undoes the first within a fortnight of Holy Hill traffic.

The better answer is one visit in early November, once the visitor season has ended and the leaves are down but before the first brine. At that point the cabin has sand from Friess Lake under the leaf debris, the paint has a summer of sap under an autumn of tannin, and the arches are packed with wet leaves. One full day takes all of it out together and gets protection on before winter.

The exterior half in November

Wet oak and maple leaves packed behind mud flaps and in arch liners come out first, because they hold moisture against metal. Then the cowl drains under the windscreen get cleared — blocked cowl drains are how leaf-season water ends up in a footwell. Then the paint: an organic stage for the sap and tannin, iron remover for a season of hill-road brake dust, clay for what is left, and a sealant or coating on before the salt.

Leaf tannin on light paint is the one to look for. A leaf left on a bonnet through a wet October weekend leaves a brown outline that survives washing and needs the organic stage to lift.

The interior half in November

Friess Lake sand is still in the carpet from August, crusted into the pile where a vacuum has been passing over it for two months. Wet leaves tracked in through October have added tannin staining to the mats and moisture to the footwells. And the short, slow autumn trips on the hill roads have never warmed the cabin enough to dry any of it.

Compressed air, then extraction across the footwells and the boot, then the load floor lifted — lake vehicles put sand in the spare well — and the cabin goes into winter dry. Which is the whole point of doing it before the salt rather than after.
