Twice a year

The underside of an ice-fishing truck

A vehicle driven onto a frozen lake comes off with something packed into the arches and the underside that we do not see anywhere else: lake slush.

Lake slush is not clean snow. It carries whatever was on the ice surface — auger shavings, bait residue, spilled fuel from augers and heaters, and whatever the last hundred vehicles left behind. It packs into wheel arches, around suspension components and along the sills, then meets road brine on the drive home and freezes into a contaminated crust that stays until spring.

That crust is corrosive and it is organic. It is why the underside of an ice-fishing truck in late February is the most contaminated surface we see all year, and why a rinse does nothing for it. The exterior half of a full detail on these vehicles is largely about getting under the car.

The cabin in winter

Ice-fishing gear is wet, cold and organic. Bait, fish, propane, slush on boots, and the damp that comes off all of it in a warm cab. It is a marine odor problem happening in January, and it lands in the rear footwells and the cargo area where it stays.

Extraction handles it. Surface cleaning does not, because the material has gone into the carpet backing with the slush and the smell is the material breaking down below the surface.

Summer on the same vehicle

Then the ice goes out and the same truck spends July at the downtown beach: sand ground into the carpet, sunscreen on hard surfaces, wet gear on seats. That is the standard Lake Country summer profile, and on a Pewaukee vehicle it arrives on top of a winter that was never fully cleaned out.

Which is why we recommend twice a year here rather than one big annual visit — after the ice season and after the beach season. A single annual detail on a year-round lake vehicle spends half its year undone. Two visits, each aimed at the season that just ended, is the only cadence that keeps up.
