A year outside, on paint

A garaged car spends most of its life dry. A street-parked city car spends most of its life wet — dew every morning, rain, plough spray, freeze-thaw overnight — and wet is what turns everything that lands on paint into something bonded to it.

Twelve months of that produces a surface with more embedded fallout, more mineral spotting and more road film than the same car would have accumulated in three years of garaged suburban life. It feels rough under a plastic bag, it looks flat even when clean, and no wash of any kind addresses it, because none of it is on the surface any more.

The exterior half of a full detail on a city car is almost entirely decontamination. Iron remover, clay, then protection, because unprotected paint back on a city street is clean until tomorrow morning.

A year outside, in the cabin

A cabin that never sits somewhere warm never dries out in winter. Slush comes in on shoes every day from November to March and it goes into the carpet backing, where road salt holds it. The car is driven for twenty minutes, parked outside again, and the cycle repeats.

By March a street-parked Milwaukee cabin has been continuously damp for four months and it smells like it. That is not a spill and it is not a cleaning problem. It is moisture and salt in the backing, and extraction is what pulls both out together.

The rest of the cabin has the city profile: concentrated driver's-side wear, food and drink from a car that is also a waiting room, and the grit that comes in from a street rather than a driveway.

Why the drive, and when

The honest reason is time. A full-day reset with one vehicle in the bay is the thing a street-parked car needs, and it is the thing volume shops in the city are not set up to do. Dwell time on chemicals, a second extraction pass, assessing the paint after it is clean rather than before — those are the first things cut when another car is waiting.

Book it for April, once the city stops treating streets. Doing it in March puts a clean car back into two more weeks of salt. And plan the day: it is a drop-off, not a wait, and it is thirty-five to forty-five minutes each way.
