Contact marring is a different pattern

Wash marring is a random swirl across every panel. City contact marring is localised and directional: a scuff on the mirror housing from a passing truck, a rubbed patch on the rear quarter from a parallel-parker, paint transfer on a bumper corner, a vertical scrape on a door from a structure column.

It concentrates on the corners and the extremities of the vehicle, and it is usually shallow at the edges and deeper in the middle where the contact was hardest. That matters because the edges correct fully and the centre often does not, and knowing which is which before starting is most of the honesty in the quote.

Paint transfer, and why it looks worse than it is

A large share of what Milwaukee owners think is damage is another vehicle's paint sitting on top of theirs. Bumper-to-bumper contact in tight parking leaves a smear of the other car's colour, and it looks like a gouge. Most of the time it is a solvent-stage removal, not correction, and the paint underneath is scuffed rather than cut.

We try the solvent first on every transfer mark. It comes off far more often than owners expect, and what is left is usually light marring that a single-stage correction levels.

Structures and columns

Parking structures put concrete columns and walls within inches of doors, and a season of tight structure parking leaves vertical scuffing on door edges and lower panels that is unlike anything a suburban car collects. Concrete is abrasive and the marks it leaves are often deeper than a bumper transfer.

The corrective question is the same: does it catch a fingernail. If not, it levels. If it does, it is through the clear and the honest answer is improvement rather than removal. A street car that is going to keep living on the street is also a strong case for a coating after correction, because the next contact then marks the coating.
