March and late May

March: after the sturgeon season

Two weeks on the ice in February with a shanty leaves a truck in a specific state. The underside and arches are packed with lake slush that froze in with road brine on the drive home — slush that carried auger shavings, heater fuel and whatever the ice surface held. It is corrosive and it is organic, and it does not come off with a rinse.

The cab has held people in heavy gear, food, sometimes fish, and the slush that came in on boots, for long cold days with the heater running. That is the damp-and-organic combination that produces a smell by March, and it needs extraction rather than surface cleaning.

Both halves in one day, in March, before the salt season ends and before the cab has been wet for another month, is the visit that removes the most.

Late May: after the lake fly hatch

The Mother's Day hatch leaves residue across the leading surfaces of any vehicle that was out in it, and that residue bakes on in May sun and etches clear coat within a few warm days.

By late May the etching is done and it is visible under clean paint as a field of small marks on the bonnet, mirrors and windscreen surround. The exterior half of a full detail decontaminates the paint and gets it clean enough to see the etch pattern clearly; where it is significant, that is a correction conversation and we will tell you honestly whether it is worth it.

The best defence is a wash during the hatch rather than after it, which is not detailing advice, it is just true.

Forty minutes, and whether it makes sense

Fond du Lac has detailers. The drive to Hartford makes sense for the March reset on a sturgeon truck, for a lake fly etch assessment, or for a full reset on a vehicle that has done both seasons and never had one. It does not make sense for a wash, and we will say so.

It is a full-day drop-off. Plan the day.
