The most-treated pavement in the county

Two state highways meet in Hartford, and both are priority routes for the county crews that maintain them under WisDOT contract. The junction and the approaches get brine ahead of every forecast storm and salt through it, and vehicles that cross it daily — which is most of the city — pick up more per mile there than almost anywhere else in our area.

Brine dries into a white film that wicks into jambs, rockers and the seams where trim meets paint. Salt on top of it adds crystalline grit. Brake dust from the stop-start at the junction embeds into the film. By March the lower half of a Hartford commuter is a layered composite that rinsing does not touch, and the iron and clay stages of decontamination are what take it apart.

Main Street parking

Downtown Hartford's angled parking on Main Street is convenient and it is hard on cars. Angled bays put every driver's door edge next to the neighbour's fender, and the reverse-out into traffic means bumpers meet. That is not detailing, but the scuffs and transfer it leaves are: paint transfer from another car's bumper is a solvent-stage job, and it comes off far more often than owners expect.

Street trees along Main and the side streets add the organic layer — sap, droppings, leaf tannin — and a car that parks downtown for work takes it daily.

The Rubicon River corridor and the west side

Spring brings fine dust off the river corridor and the farm fields on the west edge of the city, and it settles on damp paint where it bonds. Pike Lake adds a summer of sand thrown up from the park roads onto the lower panels.

Being local means we see Hartford vehicles at every stage of that cycle, and the honest timing is April for the decontamination and September for the protection ahead of the next junction winter. If you are in town, we can usually fit exterior work in the same week.
