Algae film is organic, and it bonds

A shallow, warm lake grows algae, and algae film on a trailer or a tow vehicle is not dirt. It is living material that dries into a bonded layer with a green stain underneath it, and on light paint and white trailers that stain is the thing owners notice and cannot remove.

Washing dried algae film lifts some of the surface and leaves the stain, because the stain is pigment that has bonded to the surface as the film dried. It needs to be softened with a suitable cleaner and removed as part of decontamination, and on a trailer that has done a season in the lake that is a genuine job rather than a rinse.

The tow vehicle gets it thrown onto the rear panels and tailgate from the trailer, and tracked onto the sills from the ramp. Same material, same fix.

Farm roads add the other kind

Outside the city, Dodge County roads carry the organic material that comes with working farmland — mud and manure from field access, seasonal spreading on the road surface — and it is thrown onto lower panels and into arches where it dries hard.

It is alkaline and mildly corrosive to unprotected metal and trim over time, it is not water-soluble once dry, and it needs softening and removal as part of decontamination rather than washing. Spring and autumn are when it is heaviest.

Timing and protection

End of boating season is the window: pull the summer's algae residue off the vehicle and the trailer, decontaminate the paint, and get protection onto it before the first salt. Doing it mid-season means the next ramp visit undoes it.

Protection matters more here than on a commuter car. A coated or sealed surface releases algae film with a rinse instead of letting it bond, which is the difference between an end-of-season clean and a weekly fight.
