What ferrous fallout does inside a clear coat

Steelmaking releases fine iron particulate into the air. It settles on horizontal panels — bonnet, roof, boot lid — and because the particles are hot and sharp when they land, they embed in the clear coat rather than resting on it.

Then they rust. Each embedded particle oxidises in place, expanding slightly as it does, and on light-coloured paint that shows as a field of tiny orange specks. On dark paint it is invisible to the eye but the surface feels gritty under a plastic bag, and the rusting is happening regardless.

That expansion is what does the damage over time. A particle rusting inside clear coat opens a microscopic pit around itself, and thousands of them across a bonnet is why Saukville paint often looks dull and feels rough even when the car is otherwise well kept.

Why washing cannot touch it

A wash removes what is on the surface. Embedded iron is below the surface, held in the clear coat, and no amount of soap, pressure or scrubbing reaches it. Scrubbing harder just adds marring around particles that are still there afterwards.

The chemical iron remover works by a different mechanism entirely. It is a pH-neutral compound that reacts with iron oxide, dissolves it, and turns purple as it does — the colour is the reaction product. Sprayed on a Saukville vehicle that has never had it done, the whole car runs purple within a minute or two, and the amount coming off is usually a shock to the owner.

After that the clay stage handles what the chemical left, and then the paint gets protected, because bare decontaminated paint in the village is clean until the next dew.

Protection is the part that makes it last

Decontaminating a Saukville vehicle and leaving it bare buys a few weeks. Fallout does not stop because the car got clean.

Sealant or a ceramic coating changes what happens when the next particle lands. On a protected surface it sits on the protection rather than embedding in the clear coat, and a rinse removes it. That is the difference between managing the problem and repeating the fix every season.

For a vehicle that lives in the village we would not do the decontamination without the protection. The work is worth doing once properly, not annually.
