Organic contamination behaves differently

Most of what lands on a car — road dust, brake dust, mineral fallout — is inert. It bonds mechanically as it dries and it comes off with clay and iron remover.

What comes out of an oak is different. Frass, honeydew, sap and tannin are all organic and all water-active: they dissolve partially in dew, spread into a thin film, and then dry back onto the surface chemically bonded rather than mechanically sitting. Honeydew in particular is sugar, and sugar film on paint is a growth medium — sooty mould grows on it, which is the grey cast Elm Grove owners see on roofs by August.

So the decontamination on an Elm Grove vehicle starts with an organic-specific stage — a cleaner that breaks down sugar and protein film — before the standard iron and clay stages. Skip it and the clay just drags through the film.

Tannin is the one that stains

Oak leaf tannin is the strongest leaf stain we deal with. A wet oak leaf on light paint for a weekend leaves a brown outline of itself that survives washing, because tannin binds to the surface as the leaf dries.

On the paint it comes off with the organic stage and, where it has been there long enough, light polishing. Where it does more damage is the cowl: oak leaves pack into the cowl drains under the windscreen, the drains block, and water runs into the cabin air intake and from there into the footwell. We clear the cowl on every Elm Grove vehicle as a matter of course.

Shade means protection is mandatory

A vehicle under a canopy stays damp longer than one on an open street, and damp is what turns everything above from a nuisance into a bond. Decontaminating an Elm Grove car and leaving it bare buys a few weeks in June.

Protection changes the surface energy so organic film releases with a rinse instead of bonding. On a vehicle that lives under oaks year-round, a ceramic coating is close to the only thing that makes the paint maintainable, and we would not do the decontamination without at least a sealant behind it.
