How a leaf becomes a smell

Under the windscreen, at the base of the glass, is a plastic cowl panel with drains at each side that carry rainwater down and out under the car. Oak leaves — small, tough and abundant under an Elm Grove canopy — pack into those drains in autumn. Once blocked, the cowl fills like a gutter.

The overflow has two places to go. One is the cabin air intake, which on most vehicles sits in the cowl, so water goes through the filter and into the ducting behind the dash. The other is down the firewall and into the passenger footwell, under the carpet, where it soaks the padding.

The carpet surface dries in a day. The padding stays wet for weeks. By the time the musty smell is obvious the owner has forgotten the wet October, and the leaf that caused it is still in the drain.

Why treating the smell alone fails

Extracting a wet footwell without clearing the cowl drain is money spent twice: the next heavy rain refills the cowl, the overflow runs down the same path, and the padding is wet again inside a week.

So on any Elm Grove vehicle with a damp-footwell smell we check the cowl first. Clearing it takes minutes. Then we check the cabin filter, which has usually been sitting wet and is a source in its own right. Then we lift the carpet and extract the padding. In that order, the result holds.

Preventing it

Clear the cowl every autumn, before the leaves come down in volume, and again after. It is a five-minute job with a shop vacuum and it prevents the single most common Elm Grove interior problem we see. We do it as a matter of course on every Elm Grove vehicle that comes through, whatever it came in for.
