Find all four

Four sources, one smell

Waders are the first. They come out of the marsh wet and get thrown in the boot, and marsh water is not clean water — it is silt, decaying vegetation and everything a wetland holds. It drains into the boot carpet and from there into the spare wheel well, where it has nowhere to go.

The dog is the second. A retriever that has been in and out of cold marsh water all morning gets into the cab soaked, and the moisture goes into the seat foam and the floor padding with the marsh in it. The bacteria that follow are the wet-dog smell, and it reactivates on every humid day.

Decoys and blind bags are the third. Decoy bags leave silt wherever they are set down, and blind bags carry shell residue, food and whatever the blind floor was made of.

Birds are the fourth, on a good morning, and feathers and blood in a boot carpet are an organic source that breaks down slowly.

Why treating one does not work

An owner who notices the smell usually attributes it to the dog and cleans the seat. The seat improves; the smell does not, because the boot carpet and the spare well are still wet with marsh water and the padding under the rear seats still holds the dog.

So we look for all four before doing anything. Boot carpet lifted, spare well checked, rear padding tested for moisture, cab seat foam checked. On a season-long waterfowl vehicle it is usually all four, and the job is extraction across the rear half of the vehicle rather than a single spot.

Close of season, not spring

The temptation is to leave it until spring. Do not. Marsh water in padding through a cold winter does not dry, it just stops smelling as strongly because it is cold. In April it warms up and the smell is worse than it was in November, and the extraction is harder because more has grown.

The end of the season is the moment. If the vehicle also has a season of marsh mud through the rear cabin — it usually does — the interior detail with odor work folded in is the better booking.
