Fuel, two-stroke, damp gear

Fuel in fabric

Snowmobile gear picks up fuel. Gloves that handled a fuel can, a suit that brushed a tank, boots that stood in a spill on the trailer. That gear goes into a warm cab and the fuel off-gasses into everything porous — seat fabric, foam, carpet, headliner.

Petrol and two-stroke mix are volatile, so most of it evaporates, but the heavier fractions do not. They soak into foam and stay there, and they produce a persistent low-level fuel smell that is strongest when the cab warms up. That is not something an air freshener addresses and it is not something that fades over a summer.

Two-stroke exhaust residue

Loading and unloading a sled puts oily two-stroke exhaust onto the rear of the tow vehicle and, with the tailgate open, into the rear cabin and the boot. The residue is oil, it holds dirt and it carries smell.

On the exterior it is a solvent-stage job. Inside, on the boot carpet and the rear seat backs, it needs an oil-cutting cleaner before extraction, because water alone does not lift it.

Wet gear and the closed cab

Snowsuits, helmets and boots go into a cab wet with snow, the cab is closed, the heater runs, and the moisture goes into the padding. Repeat every weekend from December to March and the padding has not been dry for a season.

That is the damp-and-organic combination behind the musty half of the smell, and extraction handles it. The fuel half needs the foam addressed specifically. On a vehicle that has done a full season, it is usually both, and the honest expectation is major improvement on the fuel component rather than a guarantee — fuel in foam is among the harder sources we see.
