Find the water

The carpet that feels dry

Water that reaches a cabin — from a lot along the Fox River that flooded briefly, from a blocked sunroof drain, from a failed door seal — goes through the carpet and into the padding beneath it within minutes. The carpet surface then dries in a day or two. The padding does not.

Padding is foam. It holds water like a sponge, it is sealed under the carpet and the seats, and it has no airflow. It can stay wet for months. The owner checks the carpet, finds it dry, assumes the problem is over, and three weeks later the car smells musty and they cannot find why.

That smell is mold establishing in the padding. It is the single most common odor job we see from the river corridor, and it is one where the timing matters more than most: the sooner the padding is extracted, the less has grown.

Finding where it came in

We do not treat a water smell without finding the water, because if the source is still active the smell comes back after the next rain and the money was spent twice.

On a vehicle that was in a flooded lot, the source is known and the job is drying and extraction. On a vehicle where nobody knows how the water got in, the usual suspects are sunroof drains blocked with debris, cowl drains under the windscreen blocked with leaves, door membranes that have come unstuck, and windscreen seals. We check those first and we will tell you where we think the water is coming from before quoting any cleaning.

Some of those are repair jobs rather than detailing, and we will say so. A torn door membrane needs fixing, not extracting around.

What extraction does and does not fix

Recent water, padding damp but mold not yet established: extraction pulls the moisture out and the vehicle is fine. This is the case where acting inside a couple of weeks makes all the difference.

Older water, mold established: extraction removes the growth and the moisture and the great majority of the smell. It may take two passes.

Long-standing saturation, months of it: the honest answer is sometimes that the padding or a section of carpet needs replacing rather than cleaning. Foam that has been wet for a season does not always recover. We will tell you which case you have after lifting the carpet, not before.
