Thirty seconds

A drink knocked over on an unprotected cloth seat is in the foam within seconds. From that point it is an extraction job, and if it is dairy it is an odor job. On a protected seat the same drink beads on the surface for long enough to reach it with a towel, and the difference between those two outcomes is the entire product.

That thirty seconds matters more in a family vehicle than anywhere else because the spills are frequent, the person spilling cannot deal with it themselves, and the driver is usually driving. Fabric sealant on the rear seats and the car-seat zone is what turns a guaranteed stain into a wipe.

Where to protect, and where not to bother

The rear seats, the seat bases under and around the car seats, the rear door cards at kid height, the cargo area carpet. Those are the surfaces that take the family load, and they get the sealant.

The front seats can wait unless food is eaten in them. The dash gets a UV protectant for a different reason — sun, not spills. And nothing gets protected until it has been properly cleaned, because sealing soiling into a fibre makes it permanent. Protection is applied after an interior detail, never over an existing surface.

What it does not do

It does not make a seat spill-proof and we will not tell you it does. Left long enough, liquid gets through. It does not remove stains already there. It does not protect the area under a car seat that was not lifted out for the application.

What it does is buy time on every spill for a year or two of family use, and it is worth more on a light-coloured interior than a dark one, because light cloth shows what dark cloth hides. On a family vehicle with light seats it is close to the highest-return thing we do.
