Dash, leather, seat tops

A parked car is a solar oven

A vehicle parked in an open retail lot at midday builds a cabin temperature far above ambient within minutes, and it sits at that temperature for as long as the owner is inside the store. Dash tops, steering wheels and the tops of seats take direct sun through the windscreen for the whole duration.

Dash plastics lose plasticiser to UV and heat. That is a chemical change, not dirt: the surface goes matte, then chalky, then it crazes, and no product on earth reverses it. Leather loses moisture from its topcoat the same way, stiffens, and eventually cracks at the seams. A Grafton commuter that parks in the corridor lots daily is taking that damage every working day of the year, with nothing visible happening until the day it is.

What protection changes

A UV-blocking protectant on a dash does two things: it replaces the moisture and plasticiser the surface is losing, and it absorbs a meaningful share of the UV before it reaches the plastic. Applied regularly to a dash that has not yet chalked, it slows the process dramatically. Applied to a dash that has already chalked, it preserves the chalk.

Leather coating adds a sacrificial layer that takes the UV and the abrasion in place of the topcoat, and keeps the surface from drying. It is finished matte — a glossy dash or seat reflects into the windscreen and is genuinely distracting when the sun is low, which on the drive home from the corridor in winter is most of the trip.

Why spring, not autumn

Interior protection is a summer product. Applied in October it spends five months protecting against a season that was never the threat. Applied in April or May, it goes into the season that does the damage.

It also goes on after a proper clean, never over an existing surface — sealing a dirty dash locks the soiling in. Booked with an interior detail in spring, it is the single cheapest thing that keeps a Grafton interior from looking its age.
