Wet dog on protected versus unprotected fabric

A retriever out of the Bark River shakes off and then lies down on the rear seat or the cargo carpet. On unprotected fabric, river water goes straight through the fibre into the foam, carrying everything the river held, and the bacteria that follow are the wet-dog smell that comes back on every humid day.

On protected fabric the water sits on the surface long enough to be towelled, and what does get through gets through in a fraction of the volume. The foam stays dry. The smell mechanism never starts. It is the same product as on a family seat, doing a more important job, because the alternative is not a stain — it is an odor problem in the padding.

Trail mud and gear

Mud on boots and wet gear in the boot put moisture and mineral grit into cargo carpet, and mud that dries in unprotected pile bonds to it. On sealed carpet the mud sits on the fibre surface and comes off with a vacuum once dry, rather than crusting into the pile and needing extraction.

Protection goes on the cargo area first, the rear seats second, and the rear footwells third. The front of the cabin in an outdoor vehicle usually does not need it.

Spring, after the reset

Protection is applied to a clean surface, so on a Hartland vehicle it goes on after the spring interior detail that clears the winter, and before the trail and river season that puts the dog back in the car wet three times a week.
