The return inspection is a checklist with prices

A lease-return inspector works from wear-and-tear thresholds: stains above a stated size, burns and tears, excessive seat wear, sill scuffing, odor. Each item above threshold is a charge. The cabin is not being admired. It is being itemised.

Almost every one of those items is the cumulative result of small events over the lease term — a drink that went into the seat, a season of sun on the dash, three years of getting in and out on the driver's bolster. None of them was dramatic. All of them are billable at the end.

What protection takes off the list

Fabric sealant on cloth seats means the spilled drink beads long enough to reach a towel instead of wicking into the foam and becoming a stain above threshold. Leather coating on the driver's bolster takes the abrasion in place of the topcoat, which is the difference between wear and a charge for wear. UV protectant on the dash keeps it from chalking, which is a trim-damage line on most guidelines.

Applied at the start of the lease, on a new interior, it is prevention. The math is simple: the cost of protection at the start against the sum of the interior line items at the end, and on most vehicles it is not close.

If the lease is already half over

Protection still helps, applied to a properly cleaned interior, but its job changes from preventing damage to slowing what is already underway. The return prep conversation at the end is where the remaining items get addressed, and we will tell you honestly which ones are detailing problems and which are not.

The best time was the first month. The second-best time is now, after an interior detail.
